Puch gearing complete

I Finally got around to gearing the Puch & the E50, slapped a 16 tooth so it's now 16x45. Still really responsive, does 30mph easy, cruising at quarter throttle. Does 40mph and manages the hills well. So that's it I'm happy with that not going to mess about with it now. 40mph was my goal and to get up the hills that we are surrounded by. Need to sort the jetting though as its still to rich.

Puch gearing

I messed about with my chain and could only fit a 12 front sprocket on. So on the last run I had a 12x45 set up. This was amazing in the hills in the Kernow but killed the top end cruising speed, 30mph cruise 34/35 top end. I bought a new chain and installed a 14x45. This instantly added 5mph to the cruising top end. Yesterday I put a 15 on so 15x45 and hit 40mph this doesn't sound fast but on a mid range biturbo pipe and a stock 15mm Bing too end adjustments are fiddly to achieve. I'm a big guy so it's a fine balance between top end & being able to get up the hills, the hills around here are pretty big! Next will be a 16! I'm hoping this will be it cruising at 40mph and still able to cope with the hills with me on board.
The pic is making use of my house mates tressells, Nice!

Bing jetting.

Just a quick note, was up and running on my highest jet a 94, then did a short 20 mile test trip with cookson two nights ago, which I had down jetted to my next biggest a 88. Bigger jump than I'd of liked. Still really boggy top end, so have just gone out around the block with a 86 installed. So much smoother all the way through the power. Still ever so slightly backing off so will stick with it tomorrow and see. Probably take my jets with me. Fingers crossed for nice weather.

New Paoili hydraulic forks fitted

So today we got the forks fitted and wheel back on, also fitted the bing on as I want to test it's low end capabilities and the performance difference. So these forks are definitely better, bigger but heavier also. The ride should be smoother so I'm pleased with the overall purchase. For €60/£51/ $78's delivered they were a eBay bargain, French eBay certainly has come up trumps with these puppies!
The front mud guard or "fendooor" if your American is going to need to fabrication to get it re-fitted as the aren't any mounting options apart from the god awful look of having it like a mud plucking scrabbler.

Test run and MOT next

Cheers Cookson

Motor stand

So with winter fast approaching my attentions have yet again fallen to the E50, my bug bear, I've spent a fortune in it, hours changing bits and still no joy! So I've invested in a stand so I (cookson) can work in the bench and be able to access all angles properly with out damaging it. I'm going to buy all new gaskets, crank seals again, sparky, etc... At the moment It lies idle in a bucket polished & case matched with a brand new racing crank 70cc head on! Just doesn't work!

Helicoil Heaven

Helicoil Heaven

So this morning I woke up with one thing on my mind, getting this head fixed. so the kit arrived yesterday and so there was nothing stopping me.

I drilled it out & tapped it with the new tap from the kit ready for the helicoil insert

the tapping was easy actually steel in alloy works like a hot knife through butter. i used the insertion tool and it worked.... like i ever doubted it...

Only downside of the kit, was the magnetic tool supplied to break off the nubbing thingy broke straight away.... obviously no expense spared in the making of this tool.
put the head back on, carb, exhaust etc and it started on the first kick #goodtimes a rolling....

MAD run 2

Sinclairio and i finally got both our mopeds roadworthy so decided to go for a ride. In total we covered 25miles with the puch loosing various parts along the way including its chain, air filter and carb! We had a blast and the run only ended when the Honda motor on Sinclairio's puch shot its plug. Looking forward to another ride soon.

E50 case match

I thought with arrival of a new race crank and its perfectly timed perish of my stock crank I thought I'd case match the engine. So I practised on my original E50 before using my carrying it on the newer case!

So if you fancy a go just secure the engine in a vice or on a stable surface. Then offer the larger gasket mine is a 70cc to the head and mark up the showing case with a permanent marker

E50 case match II

The remove the Gasket to reveal the black marks and the metal which will need removing. The case will need grinding back to match up with the head and allow a greater air flow thus higher pressure! More pressure with a racing crank a 70cc head and a roller bearing should mean the good times rolling baby!

E50 Case match III

Once it's ground out, I used a Dremmel with a grinding wheel. Just shave the metal out, I choose to angle back the cut to to fade the grind to a taper. This should be fine, but we will see!

Changing of the guard

So after a week of the bike running it broke down again. The compression was mentally high around 170 the head was getting fuel and a great spark. So Cookson suggested the crank seals may have gone. They did look ropey so it was a great shout. De-mounted the engine and began work.

Changing of the guard II

When I got the clutch out I found that I now have a three shoe clutch wheel. Ace. Then came across the problem of moving the last bearing to change the bigger of three seals. After researching on Moped army’s wiki I found this picture of a car ball joint fork to pop them up. Also suggested using screwdrivers to force the situation if you haven't got access to a fork.

Changing of the guard III

So then the crank seals are all changed and now its running again. has 140 compression and starts on the first kick again. Saweeeeeeeeet MOFO's
